getting real about self-love

Hey hey!

How have you been doing this week while surrounded by the topic of love?

BTW, I’m not writing to you to talk about relationships—that’s a loaded topic.

I wanted to check in and share a few thoughts on the topic of self-care/self-love.

The concept of self-care has inundated the wellness industry. Have you noticed that most articles make the self-care sound easy? Gosh, when I write about it myself sometimes, it sounds easy, too (and trust that’s not my intention).

You and I both know self-care is easier said than done.

I want to go beneath the surface of the Self-Care Sundays filled with facials, bubble baths, and indulgences (not saying I don’t appreciate these things-I love them).

Let’s acknowledge that the maintenance of our physical health can feel taxing itself at times. Ensuring that we’re meal planning, staying hydrated, working out, sleeping well, and keeping our personal space tidy at most on a daily basis.

Oh, let’s not forget the nurturing practice for our mental health: meditation, expressing gratitude, ensuring we laugh often and hanging with our friends/family or even having time alone.

The list is building up, right?!

Let’s alleviate the pressure here by saying…

“We can’t do all of these things everyday. But, we can do some.”

Here’s another thing, sometimes we don’t realize we’re taking care and loving ourselves in other ways.

I want to highlight some self-care (or rather self-love) moments we tend to forget about.

You’re practicing self-love when you’re…

  • Setting boundaries that honors your values and your comfort.

  • Standing up for yourself when your moral code is challenged.

  • Letting go a part of your life that no longer serves you.

  • Forgiving yourself when you’ve felt you’ve done a wrong or sold yourself short.

  • Bouncing back from hardships and thriving from your resilience.

  • Enriching your life knowledge.

  • Investing in your self preservation in any possible way.

Remember, everyone’s journey is different. So, there’s no singular version of self love.

You don’t have to be perfect in your wellness journey.

Give yourself some slack.

Give yourself some love.

And when it comes to that thing called love, I will always send mine.
