Put a Little Spring into Your Step
When Spring comes around, I love that the days last a bit longer and the weather is starting to warm up. It has me yearning to be out and about instead of being cooped up indoors.
So in celebration of another random holiday: National Walking Day…. April 6th, I wanted to take this opportunity to not take the ordinary activity of walking for granted.
Walking, is often times underestimated for its benefits.
What are some facts about walking you ask?
Well, walking is cardio-protective: it can reduce the risk of hypertension.
Walking also helps your glucose metabolism, reducing the chance of developing diabetes.
Walking can boost brain structure, function, and cognition.
Walking can help build your stamina and burn excess calories helping with any weight management goals.
how much walking is beneficial?
The CDC recommends that adults, including older adults, get a minimum of 150 minutes of aerobic activity (such as brisk walking) per week. That’s about 15,000 steps per week (a little over 2,000 steps per day).
For more health benefits, the CDC recommends upping that goal to 300 minutes per week. This equals about 30,000 steps per week (just under 5,000 steps per day).
(By the way, brisk walking is a pace that gets you feeling a tad out of breath.)
If you’re not briskly walking frequently, try to get more steps in during the day. You may have heard of the general goal of 10,000 steps a day. It seems like a lot. And it can be for a lot of people, and for some it’s an easy goal to reach.
Now, there’s no one size fit all approach. It’s worth to mention that that your “steps” goal can change pending on how old you are, your weight, and your current health status. It’s hard to reach 10,000 steps pending your current lifestyle or your profession.
So be gentle with yourself, start slow if you have to. Just get moving and get some fresh air.
Spring out of the chair and make strides to energize your mind and body.
Now that we’ve talked the talk, now give yourself time to walk the walk. Cheers!
