To New Beginnings

Here we are stepping into the new year!

Let’s talk about a practice that has been around since ancient history, but has been overlooked in our modern hustle. I have to admit, I even overlooked this practice, as well.

I’m talking about: sun gazing.

What is it?

It’s best described as a meditative practice that involves staring directly at the rising (or setting sun) to help focus attention and clear the mind. Proponents of sun gazing suggest that the practice provides energy and promotes healing.

My Thoughts

I was skeptical about sun gazing. Quite honestly I was about to dismiss it entirely. As a doctor, my ultimate concern is permanent eye damage. C’mon I don’t want my retinas to fry.

On the flipside, the practice has been around for millenia. So, there has to be some benefits, right? instead of completely writing it off I decided to look into sun gazing. Thus far, I haven’t come across firm scientific research to support the practice.

what the literature reveals:

1. Vitamin D Boost.

I don’t think you need to look into the sun to do this, but general sun exposure allows your body to absorb vitamin D. What’s so important about Vitamin D?  It plays a role in maintaining strong bones supporting immune function and regulating mood. Consider it as a sun kissed boost for your general well being.

2. Energize like a Pro

Whether you’re encumbered by looming deadlines ahead, countless meetings to attend, or being haunted by never-ending to-do list, instead of reaching for another cup of coffee you can consider spending quality time with the sun, Remember, the sun theoretically causes a stimulation of serotonin production within your body. The serotonin will provide you with a natural energy boost minus any side effects. It's like having a power nap without napping.

3. Sleep like a Boss

Quality sleep is crucial to our health. Guess what? Sun gazing can be your ally, in achieving it! Exposing yourself to sunlight helps regulate your body clock. How? Sunlight can stimulate the pineal gland, affecting melatonin production. This translates into more restful nighttime hours – allowing you to wake up refreshed and rejuvenated. Bid farewell, to restlessness. Embrace the wonders of revitalizing sleep.

4. Stress Reduction for the Powerhouses

Engaging in sun gazing triggers the release of serotonin – a natural mood stabilizer in the brain. So whenever stress levels start creeping up take some time off step and let the sun work its magic. Your mind will appreciate this.

5. Break with Tech and Align with Nature

In our tech-driven world, we often forget the simple joy of connecting with nature. Sun gazing offers a moment of mindfulness, a chance to unplug and soak in the beauty of the rising sun. It's not just about the physical benefits; it's also about finding a serene moment in the midst of our fast-paced lives.

Val’s Experience:

I’m new to the sun gazing practice, so I’ve just tried this out the past 2 weeks. I can only say is it’s nice to set time aside to watch the sunrise or sunset for a few minutes. It is indeed meditative. I have to admit, I found myself meditating outdoors with my eyes closed!

Overall, I’m on the fence on this practice.

If you chose to engage, remember, this isn’t a staring contest, simply flirt with the sun!

I’ve read  the best way to start is aim for a few minutes at a time and gradually increase as your eyes adjust. Practice during safe hours – early morning or late evening. Invest in quality eye protection to keep those peepers safe. And wear sunscreen.

So as  we step into the new year, remember to take a break, step outside, and have a moment to self. Here's to a year filled with health, happiness, and a touch of sunshine.
